K_payne Saved my data (I have a spinning disk magnetic drive) SMARTReporter alerted me to an I/O error. By itself, an I/O error doesn't mean that a drive failure is imminent, but it kept happening and my MBP was getting slower. I used the SMART tools and tests to discover that the drive was encountering bad clusters. Over 3 days, the drive went from 14 bad clusters to 39 bad clusters. Luckily, the drive did not exhaust its spare clusters, but the rate of bad clusters was indicating a drive failure soon! SMARTReporter gave me enough time to get a current backup. Then I got the drive replaced under warranty and a few hours later, I'm back up and running -- not a file out of place.
